This majestic anthem for the Ascension of the Lord is regal in character yet readily accessible and deeply rewarding for choirs of varied skill levels. An extended fanfare and introduction evoke the “trumpet blast” of Psalm 47, while a mysterious and otherworldly middle section awakens anticipation of Christ’s glorious return.
Scored for SATB Choir, Organ, Brass, and Timpani, the work is conceived by default for Brass Quartet (2 Trumpets and 2 Trombones). However, it is flexibly written to accommodate Brass Quintet or even larger ensembles. When performed with Brass Quintet (2 Trumpets, Horn in F, Trombone, and Tuba), the Trombonist may perform from the Trombone 2 part, with dedicated Horn and Tuba parts provided. For additional versatility, both Trumpet parts are notated for either C or B-flat instruments. This edition includes the full choral score and all instrumental parts. A minimum purchase of 25 copies is required.
Text
God is gone up with a merry noise: and the Lord with the sound of the trumpet. O sing praises, sing praises unto our God: O sing praises, sing praises unto our King.
~Psalm 47:5-6, translation from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer
Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come, as you have seen him going into heaven.
~Acts 1:11, Introit for Ascension, translation from the Douay-Rheims Bible
