This straightforward but beautiful piece has proven itself to be accesible to choirs with a wide variety of skills levels. It's homophonic treatment of the text was inspired by choral works by 20th Century French composers such as Francis Poulenc, Pierre Villette, and Maurice Duruflé
This motet sets the two final stanzas of St. Thomas Aquinas’ famed hymn, Pange Lingua. Although the full hymn is, properly speaking, intended for Maundy Thursday, the following two stanzas are sung throughout the year in the context of Eucharistic Benediction:
Tantum ergo sacramentum veneremur cernui,
et antiquum documentum novo cedat ritui;
praestet fides supplementum sensuum defectui.
Genitori Genitoque laus et iubilatio,
salus, honor, virtus quoque sit et benedictio;
procedenti ab utroque compar sit laudatio. Amen.
Down in adoration falling, this great Sacrament we hail,
O'er ancient forms of worship newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith will tell us Christ is present, when our human senses fail.
To the Everlasting Father, and the Son who made us free
And the Spirit, God proceeding from them Each eternally,
Be salvation, honour, blessing, might and endless majesty. Amen.
