This soulful and melody work was composed at the request of Dr. Jacob Benda for the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, MN to commemorate the 1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. The macaronic text of this work is based primarily on a stanza of the Latin Christmas Carol, Adeste Fideles. However, a series of verses from Sacred Scripture are interpolated throughout the course of the piece, forming a sort of mosaic that depicts the arc of Salvation History, ranging from “the beginning,” as told in the Gospel of John, and ending with the eschatological texts from the Book of Revelation. The musical approach to composition is largely atmospheric and contemplative in nature, seeking to present these texts in a transparent and easily intelligible manner.

The theological fruits of the Council of Nicaea have been passed down in a systematic and condensed manner in the form of the Nicene Creed, which is recited and professed around the world to this very day. The title of this piece, Deum de Deo, Lumen de Lumine, translated “God from God, Light from Light” is derived from the text of this Creed, and it encapsulates some of the key positions of the Council of Nicaea:

  • “True God from true God.” Christ is truly Divine.
  • “Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father.” Christ is not a creature created by God the Father, but rather, he is of one substance with the Father.
  • God the Son (Christ) is coeternal with God the Father, existing before all time. He is the “beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega.”
